A Visit to Delft

A few weekends ago Super Friend visited for the weekend. Having already having banned all visits to the zoo, the dolphinarium and the casino I left a tourist book on Holland for SF in the guest room.

Saturday was spent shopping in Rotterdam…boy is it a great place for shopping…and Sunday was spent on a trip to Delft.

Delft is located in Zuid-Holland (South Holland) about 30 minutes away from Rotterdam. The city dates from the 13th century and is known for its canals, Delft Blue pottery and being the place that Willem van Orange was shot (you can visit the location and see the bullet holes…but we didn’t bother – it was probably closed on a Sunday like most things in Holland anyways!). This was also the living place of the famous Dutch painter Vermeer known often for his painting Girl with a Pearl Earring.

The town itself is very beautiful with many cool buildings. However it is very touristy with many shops surrounding the square selling anything and everything covered in the blue traditional painting. The touristy scene has its good points and bad points. It does ensure that things are actually open on a Sunday including some lovely outdoor food places and it is pretty funny watching confused tourist handling all their ‘euros’ (its even more fun when you then turn around and conduct your shopping in Dutch!). However it does make it impossible to take a photo without gaggles of people in it.

SF, RC and myself wandered around the town, had a nice coffee and then went in the shops in search for a nice souvenir. I myself wanted a Delft Blue Tile which I found that has old Dutch ice skaters on it, which makes me smile every time I look at it.

Overall Delft is a great place to visit and has that added incentive of being open on a Sunday. Photos for all to enjoy.

Off to get ready for the theatre…
